Our blueberries in the project
The American Blueberry
Greetings from Huckleberry Finn: The world-famous adventurer penned by author Mark Twain is named after the American blueberry. Especially if you combine several varieties, you can transform your garden into a sea of flowers and fruits with these shrubs. Typical of American blueberry varieties is their light-colored flesh.
Vaccinium corymbosum „Atlantic“
This North American blueberry variety originally comes from forests, bogs, swamps and is therefore very adaptable. In July it bears tasty fruit. Even though she is self-pollinating, we recommend growing at least two other blueberry varieties nearby for a better harvest.

'Atlantic' is fully hardy and can therefore thrive in very cold locations. For good growth, it needs a sunny spot with loose, well-drained soil. Then the plant can reach a growth width of approx. 180 - 240 cm and a growth height of approx. 180 - 240 cm.
Growth: Height 180 - 240 cm / width 180 - 240 cm
Flower shape: single flower
Flower color: white
Harvest: July
Location: sunny
Hardiness: hardy, deciduous
Watering: regular, without waterlogging
Planting time: all year round (except when the ground is frozen)
Vaccinium corymbosum „Bluecrop“
The dark blue fruits of the 'Bluecrop' are firm, durable, large and have a slightly sweet and sour aromatic taste. For a high yield, at least three blueberry plants of different varieties should be planted nearby. The harvest season begins between the beginning of June and the end of August.

For good growth, we recommend a semi-shady place, as well as acidic and peaty soil. Then it can reach a growth width of 80 - 100 cm and a growth height of 100 - 120 cm.
Growth: Height 100 - 120 cm/width 80 - 100
Flower shape: simple bell-shaped flower
Flower color: white
Fruit: large, firm, sweet and sour taste
Harvest: early June - late Augustv
Location: partial shade
Hardiness: hardy, deciduous
Watering: regular, without waterlogging
Planting time: all year round (except when the ground is frozen)
Vaccinium corymbosum „Dixi Früh“
This blueberry variety, native to North America, bears medium-sized, sweet and sour aromatic fruits in July. The "Dixi Früh" is very easy to care for and frost hardy. Therefore, it is a good entry point for beginners in the field of plant cultivation. The plant is self-fertile. For an optimal fruit harvest, however, at least three different blueberry varieties are required, which should be planted relatively close together.

In order for the "Dixi Früh" to develop well, we recommend acidic soil and the use of low-lime water. A shady place. Then it can reach a growth width of 80 - 100 cm and a growth height of 100 - 200 cm.
Growth: growth height 80 - 100 cm / growth width 100 - 200 cm
Flower shape: small bell-shaped flower
Flower color: creamy white
Fruit: July, medium-sized, sweet and sour
Location: shady
Hardiness: hardy, deciduous
Irrigation: regularly, without waterlogging, low-lime water
Planting time: all year round (except when the ground is frozen)
Vaccinium corymbosum „Goldtraube“
The medium-blue fruits of the 'Goldtraube' offer high yields and are very tasty. Blueberries are self-pollinating. However, cross-pollination tends to produce more flowers and fruit. In order to achieve the highest possible yields when harvesting the fruit, we recommend planting at least three different varieties close together. The fruits can then be harvested in large numbers from August to September.

For good growth, we recommend a sunny to semi-shady place, slightly acidic soil, and bark mulch to protect the shallow roots. Then it can reach a growth width of 60 - 100 cm and a growth height of 100 - 150 cm. This strain is considered relatively hardy to cold and dry weather.

Vaccinium corymbosum „Heerma II“
The 'Heerma II' blueberry has strong and dense foliage and bears healthy, tasty, large fruits from mid-August to mid-September. Like other bilberry or blueberry varieties, it is self-pollinating. However, for an optimal yield of fruit from the shrub, it is advisable to combine the plant with two other other varieties, as flower production is higher with cross-pollination.

For good growth, we recommend a sunny to semi-shady spot, slightly acidic soil and bark mulch to protect the shallow roots. Then it can reach a growth width of 60 - 90 cm and a growth height of 100 - 170 cm.
Growth: Height 100 - 170 cm/width 60 - 90 cm
Flower shape: simple bell-shaped flower
Flower color: white
Harvest: mid-August - mid-September
Pruning: after flowering
Location: sunny, semi-shady
Hardiness: hardy, deciduous
Watering: regular, without waterlogging
Planting time: all year round (except when the ground is frozen)
Vaccinium corymbosum „Sunshine Blue“
What makes 'Sunshine Blue' so special is its evergreen foliage. Its unusual pink flowers also make it a sought-after ornamental plant. Its medium to large fruits can be harvested from July to August and are deliciously sweet and sour. The plant has the opportunity to fertilize itself. Nevertheless, up to three different varieties should be planted nearby for better fruit formation.

The 'Sunshine Blue' blueberry needs slightly acidic, well-drained and fresh to moist garden soil for good growth. Bark mulch is recommended for good root development. Then it can reach a growth width of 80 - 120 cm and a growth height of 80 - 100 cm.
Growth: height 80 - 100 cm/width 80 - 120 cm
Flower shape: single flower
Flower color: pink
Fruit: medium to large, sweet and sour
Harvest: July – August
Location: partial shade
Hardiness: hardy, deciduous
Watering: regular, without waterlogging
Planting time: all year round (except when the ground is frozen)
Vaccinium corymbosum „Toro“
The blue-black fruits of 'Toro' are large, round and have a sweet, aromatic taste. For a high yield, at least three blueberry plants of different varieties should be planted nearby. Harvest time begins in July.

For good growth, we recommend a semi-shady place, as well as acidic and peaty soil. Then it can reach a growth width of 100 - 150 cm and a growth height of 100 - 150 cm.

Fruit: large blue-black berries, sweet taste
Harvest: July
Autumn colour: yellow-orange, red
Location: partial shade
Hardiness: hardy, deciduous
Watering: regular, without waterlogging
Planting time: all year round (except when the ground is frozen)
Vaccinium ovatum „Huckleberry“
This plant originally comes from the west coast of the United States and from the coastal region of the Canadian province of "British Columbia". From there, it began its triumphal march into US supermarkets. However, it can also be grown very well here with us.

The "Huckleberry" needs rather acidic soil and thrives equally well in shady and sunnier areas.
Growth: Up to 100 cm high, upright
Flower shape: bell-shaped flower
Flower color: red-white
Harvest: August to September
Fruit: productive, about 1 cm
Winter hardiness: up to approx. -15°C, evergreen
Position: Sun, semi-shade, also tolerates shade, prefers acidic soil
Watering: regular, without waterlogging
Planting time: all year round (except when the ground is frozen)
Bee food: yes
Bird food: yes
Vaccinium myrtillus
In contrast to the fruits of the American blueberry, the European variant has a dark blue color in both its skin and its flesh. The coloring is caused by so-called “anthocyanins”, plant-based pigments that can also be found in blackberries or cornflowers, among other things. These substances have already been proven in several studies to have health-promoting effects. As antioxidants, they reduce cell aging and can therefore help to promote health.

When planting, you should note that blueberries or blueberries grow primarily on acidic, rather nutrient-poor soil. Since their roots tend to spread shallow in the ground, you should dig a shallow planting hole that has a large diameter. You can usually expect the first harvest of fruit after three to four years.
Growth: 40-60 centimeters
Flower shape: single flower
Flower Color: White
Harvest: August to September
Fruit: productive, sweet and sour
Hardiness: yes, deciduous
Location: Partial shade, also tolerates shade, prefers acidic soil
